Maintenance of Tushar(Tussar) Silk Saree

1. For the first time wash of Tussar Silk dry cleaning is the best option.

2. Should not enclose the Tussar Silk(or any other silk) products because silk needs to breath.

3. If you want to hand wash the Tussar fabric use mild detergents(or shampoo) and wash it with cold water.

                                             Tussar Silk is used as a raw material in furnishing designs, embroidery material and in Pattachitras of Orissa. In the Weaving of some of the Dharmavaram, Jamdani and kota Sarees, this Silk thread is used as a either wrap of weft threads or both being used this thread.

In Kota Sarees weaving this  is used as one of the warp and weft thread becomes this silk thread or both being used this Silk threads.

Originally the fabric used in Bagh Print Sarees are Cotton but now Tussar Silk is used. Tussar Silk products like designer garments, designer Sarees, Plain Sarees are exported to various European countries, united states and the Gulf countries.

How to check whether Handloom or Powerloom Saree?

Big challenging to people to check/determined Handloom sarees in a market. before buying the saree these are the chick list.

Below mentioned points are very easy to find weather Handloom or Powerloom saree in shop itself.

1) You can find the threads ties at the end of the pallu as shown below picture. This is main identification to determined.

2) If you keenly observe the small holes at the end of the border both sides to the saree. These small holes created because of weaver hock the saree both side to the loom for fit into loom. This type of holes will not happen in powerloom.

3) Generally some places thread blocking and threads are coming pieces as shown below picture, this you can find all most all handloom sarees, but is it not consider as damaged.

Whereas powerloom very rare, you can say damaged saree for this blocking threads in powerloom.

4) Weft threads are not uniform, sometimes thread to thread differ gaps. You may not find this all the time for every saree!

This is my persona experience, 4 years back I brought two Mangalagiri Cotton Saree, 5 years back i brought four Mangalagiri Cotton dress materials these are working in good condition. but i found color was little faded after 4 to 5 years.

I have another story that my grand mother is using same Mangalagiri Cotton Sarees past 10 to 14 years, she brought when i was in 9th class. still she was using it, no issues.

Ancient Uppada Weaving Technique

Uppada Weavers uses the ancient technique called the jamdhani weaving technique and it is non-technical. The origin of Jamdhani weaving is Bengali.

The count used in Uppada Saree is 100 length and 120 breath and it gives softness and hardness of the fabric, made in cotton like wrap and wept . To create motif(design patterns) on Uppada Saree is complex and it takes time and grasp amount of patience.

Uppada jamdhani silk Saree Making

Weaving Procedure:
Weavers are woven the Saree on handmade machine (Maggamu).The design pattern which is used on the Saree drawn on paper is fixed under the warp threads and as the weaving starts. The designs are worked in like embroidery. 

The weft thread come nearer to the inserted design drawn paper, the weaver kept kande(roll of thread on a bamboo stick) on handmade machine(Maggamu in Telugu). The crosswise weft thread that fill the warp thread in weaving. weaver sews down the inserted portion of the design with needle and continues till the pattern is completed.
